There are a large number of flying fish in the Caribbean Sea. Barbados wasknown as the “The land of flying fish”in the past. Flying fish are often caught by predators4 and fisherman. Luckily, their number in the wild is still stable5 and theyare not in danger.
Here are something interesting about flying fish:
Flying fish are usually 7 to 12 inches long. Fins6 of flying fish look like wingswhen they are spread7.
Flying fish are like torpedo8. Their fins are closed when they swim to get fasterin the water. Before jumping out of the water, flying fish swims faster and faster.When its speed9 comes up to 37 miles per hour, it jumps out of the water andspreads its wings.
Flying fish can fly up to 4 feet in the air, and stay in the air for 655 feet beforegoing back to the water. They can travel 1,312 feet with no break. This is importantbecause it helps to run away from predators. Young flying fish have whiskers10 nearthe mouths, and they look like the plants under the water.
Flying fish swim in large groups. They are very sensitive to the light and lookfor food in the night. They can live around 5 years in the wild.
