In the autumn of 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the joint building of the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”. Over the past decade, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has become a popular global public good and international cooperation platform. Since 2013, more than 150 countries and 30 international organizations have signed BRI cooperation agreements.

The BRI has bestowed Chongqing, the municipality in the heart of inland China, upon significant development opportunities. In the past ten years, Chongqing has turned from a “fullback” into a “forward” of opening-up. It has embarked on a road of openness, inclusiveness, and shared benefits, consolidating the foundation for friendly cooperation and embracing new development opportunities. It has pioneered a road of prosperity, venturing across mountains and seas and catalyzing high-quality regional socio-economic development. It has forged ahead on a road of cultural exchanges, fostering new prospects of enhanced understanding among different peoples and better interactions and integration of diversified cultures.

On the tenth anniversary of the BRI, The World and Chongqing will present a series report titled Ten Years On: Belt and Road in Chongqing in three editions. We will interview heads from Chongqing municipal departments, esteemed experts and scholars from think tanks and universities, consular officers in Chongqing, heads of Chongqing-based overseas agencies, directors of opening-up platforms and logistics corridors, and business leaders. They, promoting and witnessing Chongqing’s efforts in Belt and Road cooperation, will share insights and experiences highlighting Chongqing’s achievements in the spirit of open cooperation, joint contribution, and shared benefits.
