The Philosophical Foundations of Cobb’s Constructive Postmodern Ecological Civilization Thought

☉Wang Junfeng

The ecological crisis poses a significant challenge to the destiny of all life forms, marking it as the most pressing issue of our time. Driven by a profound love for life and a keen sense of urgency, John B. Cobb Jr. has engaged in critical reflection on modern industrial civilization His scholarly endeavors aim to diagnose the underlying causes of ecological degradation, offering guidance to navigate through the environmental challenges we face. Throughout Cobb’s intellectual journey, Cobb has drawn heavily upon the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, utilizing it both as a tool for critiquing modernity and as a foundation for constructing his theory of postmodern ecological civilization. As a leading figure in the process philosophy tradition, Cobb has contributed a systematic and profound ecological interpretation and development of Whitehead’s philosophy of organism, significantly influencing the contemporary ecological civilization movement. This paper examines key concepts within Whitehead’s philosophy of organism, such as the “event” theory “generalized empiricism”, the category of  “creativity,” and the theory of “intrinsic relations and values.” By doing so, it aims to elucidate the theoretical underpinnings and implications of Cobb’s constructive postmodern ecological civilization thought, Furthermore, the paper seeks to foster creative dialogue and integration between process philosophy and Chinese cultural insights, thereby advancing the global proliferation and advancement of ecological civilization.
