Cloud spotting doesn’t require much.Sometimes, it can be an invitation to be mar-veled by something so common that we’ve be-come blind to it. Or you can go deeper, tryingto make sense of the sky by learning the differ-ent cloud types.
A pop science blogger surnamed Zheng,25, known as the“Cloud Collector”on the life-style platform Xiaohongshu, initially startedher account to share cloud photos in 2022.
Zheng, who enjoys finding delight in re-cording the beauty of daily life, considered it away to spread lovely moments to more people. “Clouds have always served as a source of com-fort for me”, said Zheng based in Fujian.
For Zheng, one of her most unforgettablecloud- spotting experiences occurred during aflight. It was the first time that she saw a spe-cial natural phenomenon called a“glory”, pro-duced by water drops in the air. It appeared as a hazy light point in the middle of a circular rain-bow halo.“It was such a surprise,”Zheng re-called.
As a growing number of online users be-gan to show interest and raise questions, Zhengrealized that she could offer more science con-tent about cloud spotting. So she started tolearn more by referring to specialized booksand consulting individuals with expertise inmeteorology.
Zheng has now shared nearly 200 piecesof popular science content, including cloudidentification, formation, comparisons of differ-ent cloud types and weather-related knowledge.Her account now has over 210,000 followerson Xiaohongshu, and there are five group chatson the platform where thousands of users sharetheir daily cloud-watching experiences.
Looking ahead, Zheng has plans to holdseveral gallery exhibitions.“The first round ofexhibitions will be in Xiamen in Fujian andChengdu in Sichuan,”Zheng said, adding thatshe’s gathering more cloud photos and theunique stories behind them. By doing this, shehopes to inspire more people to appreciate thebeauty of the“gentle white giants”in the sky.
