Therapeutic effect of ear acupoint therapy on epigastric pain：a Meta-analysis

Abstract  Objective：To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ear acupoint therapy in the treatment of digestive system diseases mainly characterized by epigastric pain.Methods：RCT related to ear acupoint therapy for treating epigastric pain was retrieved from PubMed，EMbase，the Cochrane Library，CNKI，WanFang Database，VIP，and CBM.The search deadline was from the establishment of each database to March 2023.RevMan 5.4 software was adopted for data analysis.Results：A total of 24 articles were ultimately included，involving 1 927 patients.The Meta-analysis results showed that the total effective rate of ear acupoint therapy for treating epigastric pain was higher than that of the control group（RR=1.19，95％CI 1.12-1.26，P＜0.000 01）.Among them，the effective rate of ear acupoint pressing therapy for epigastric pain was better than conventional treatment（RR=1.13，95％CI 1.02-1.24，P=0.02），traditional Chinese medicine decoction treatment（RR=1.26，95％CI 1.15-1.38，P＜0.000 01），and simple Western medicine treatment（RR=1.18，95％CI 1.11-1.25，P＜0.000 01）.The effective rate of transcutaneous vagus nerve electrical stimulation in the treatment of epigastric pain was better than that of non vagus nerve electrical stimulation（RR=1.37，95％CI 1.15-1.63，P=0.000 5）..Ear acupoint therapy was superior to the control group in reducing traditional Chinese medicine syndrome score（SMD=－1.49，95％CI －2.02-－0.95，P＜000 01），serum gastrin（SMD=－0.63，95％CI －1.03-－0.23，P=0.002），and improving pain symptoms（SMD=－0.89，95％CI －1.14-－0.64，P＜0.000 01），with statistically significant differences.The safety evaluation indicated that there were no significant adverse reactions observed with ear acupoint therapy.Conclusion：Existing evidence suggests that ear acupoint therapy can effectively improve gastrointestinal symptoms，mainly characterized by epigastric pain，with minimal adverse reactions.However，more high-quality，multicenter，and large sample randomized controlled trials are still needed to further validate this conclusion.
